Northern Lincolnshire councils could be merged as district councils are abolished
NORTH and North East Lincolnshire could be merged into a seperate authority if plans to abolish Lincolnshire's district councils goes ahead.
The plans could see nine district councils reduced to two or three after councillors voted on how Lincolnshire's political map could be redrawn, with the county council's preferred option is for a single unitary authority covering the whole of Lincolnshire, which would see the district councils abolished.
Councils submitted their initial ideas earlier this year as part of plans to streamline local government and save money. The Government has now tasked the authorities to choose their final options.
Cllr Liam Kelly said it as "the most sensible" option and would delivers what voters want – efficiency, value for money and uninterrupted services.
Cllr Rob Gibson, the deputy leader who is responsible for the reorganisation said any split would lead to a reduction in services and would affect every person in Lincolnshire.
Councils will need to send their plans to the government by November before a decision is made and it is expected that the changes would then come into effect for Lincolnshire by 2027.
