HullBID launches family photography trail to sharpen focus on city centre events

Image from the 2024 Pride in Hull celebration which will return to Hull city centre on Saturday, offering seasoned and fledgling photographers countless opportunities to kick off HullBID’s Picture Hull trail by capturing an array of colourful, vibrant images.
The “Picture Hull” challenge has been launched in time for Pride in Hull and will continue throughout the holidays, with participants able to submit their shots of crowd-pulling events and day-to-day life in the city centre until Sunday August 31.
Judging of images for inclusion in an exhibition will take place at the beginning of September, all entries will be displayed in an online gallery and the best will go on display in Trinity Market from Monday September 15 until Sunday October 5.
Kathryn Shillito, HullBID Executive Director, said the challenge takes in 10 locations with commemorative certificates to be awarded to anyone who completes them all.
Pride in Hull on Saturday 26 July, Humber Street Sesh on Saturday 2 August, and Dino Day on Friday 8 August are among the crowd-pulling events which will provide opportunities to snap spectacular people, places and performances.
Picture Hull is being delivered by HullBID in collaboration with the University of Hull Business School. It is inspired by the recognition in the Sunday Times earlier this year that the HU1 postcode is one of the coolest places to live in the UK but you don’t need to be a top newspaper photographer to take part. The competition is for everyone, from experienced photographers to novices with smartphones.
Kathryn said: “The photography trail is easy to enter and is open to all, whether people are working, shopping, socialising or just passing through, and it is designed to encourage people to head into the city centre, explore the different areas and look at things differently.
“Hopefully the trail will create memorable experiences for individuals and families, raise awareness of the retail and leisure opportunities and help to promote Hull city centre as a vibrant, fun and safe destination for people to enjoy.
“The events themselves are always important in terms of increasing footfall in the city centre and Picture Hull will build on that by encouraging people to make repeat visits in search of that special, winning image.”
Pride in Hull promises to be a colourful and heartfelt celebration under this year’s theme: “You’re Welcome.” The Pride in Hull parade will start at 11am from Zebedee’s Yard, which will again be the festival hub again for an occasion recognised as one of the country’s standout LGBTQIA+ events.
Queen Victoria Square will become Trans Square, shining a light on trans experiences and voices. Families will be able to enjoy inclusive activities at Ferens Art Gallery, and King Edward Street will host a bustling community market full of local artists, organisations, and makers.
