Chamber outlines culture ambassadors plan for businesses

Harlequin Toad, one of the results of the acclaimed Larkin with Toads initiative.

BUSINESSES are being urged to appoint a cast of ambassadors to maximise their involvement in Hull City of Culture 2017.

The call comes from the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce, which is to hold a free event to bring together businesses of all sizes within the arts and culture communities on both sides of the Humber, helping Northern Lincolnshire businesses to also make the most of 2017.

The aim is that people working in arts and culture will be able to show what sort of support they need to make their projects successful. Businesses looking to explore opportunities in arts and culture will be able to learn from companies which are already enjoying the benefits of investing in the sector.

The Chamber of Culture breakfast forum will take place at the Mercure Hull Royal Hotel on Tuesday November 17. It will feature insight on business engagement from the award-winning Larkin with Toads, including the project’s influence on the Australian project Hello Koalas.

The event will also look forward to the forthcoming Amy Johnson Festival and will encourage companies in the Hull and Humber area to start planning now for the launch of the City of Culture Company’s business club early next year.

Phil Ascough, who is leading on the Chamber’s City of Culture preparations, said: “The City of Culture team have got off to a great start with their corporate fund-raising but they need more, they need to involve businesses and the Chamber wants to help with that.

“We want the companies which are already supporting arts and culture to come together with those who are not yet involved and show them the benefits for the business and its workforce.

“We would urge every business to appoint an arts and culture ambassador. Find someone from within your team and give them the opportunity of looking at what other businesses are doing, finding out what the arts and culture sector needs and getting your business ready for City of Culture.”

Panellists at the event will include Elaine Burke, who led the project development side of Larkin with Toads and was subsequently appointed as a consultant to Hello Koalas, and Rick Welton, another key figure from Larkin with Toads and project director of the Amy Johnson Festival. Also on the panel will be Dr Malcolm Joslin, founder of Strategy Engage and highly experienced in corporate engagement with the community after more than 30 years with BP Chemicals.

Phil added: “Larkin with Toads was a real game-changer in terms of attracting business support for arts and culture and Malcolm Joslin was involved in much of BP’s support for major projects ranging from Humber Street Sesh to visits by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

“The panellists will provide great insight into how businesses work best with arts and culture and the real opportunities will arise from people within the different sectors coming together and finding out how they can help each other.”

Chamber of Culture will take place at the Mercure Hull Royal Hotel on Tuesday November 17 with breakfast and networking from 7.45am and presentations and discussion from 8.30am until 9.30am. Admission is free but places are limited. To reserve a place contact Bruce Massie at the Hull office on 01482 324976, or Anne Tate at the Grimsby office on 01472 342981.
