WHO can speak on behalf of the North of England? And how do we find ways for people in the North to ‘take back control’?
The British economy is now widely regarded to be one of the most spatially imbalanced in the developed world.
Devolution has gained momentum in recent years and industrial strategy promises real potential for growth in our region. However, it is becoming clear that any attempt to stimulate local or regional economic growth soon comes across a governance problem. Local authorities must be able to work collaboratively to create a better North for its citizens.
So, who will drive industrial strategy for the North of England? And, how do we find ways for people in the North to ‘take back control’? These questions are the focus of an essay exploring what a modern system of governance could look like in the North.
The launch event will celebrate Hull as the 2017 City of Culture, exploring the North’s rich tradition of democratic innovation. Speaker include;
• Ed Cox, Director IPPR North
• Rosie Millard, Chair of Hull City of Culture
• Matt Jukes, Chief Executive of Hull City Council
It will take place from 9am until 2pm on Friday 17th March at Hull Guildhall, 77 Lowgate, Hull HU1 2AA. For tickets, register here.
I do hope you can join us and offer your contribution to this essential and timely discussion, and help us to support our City of Culture. If you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to contact my colleague Maeve at m.cohen@ippr.org or on 0161 694 9683.
