A CHILDREN'S nursery is to celebrate its 20th anniversary by bringing world famous cricketer and charity campaigner Sir Ian Botham to support the Hull, Beverley and Holderness Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Educare Nursery will be the main sponsor of a dinner at which Sir Ian will speak about his cricket career and his work in raising millions of pounds for charity.

David Whincup, owner of Educare, is urging more businesses to join his company in sponsoring the dinner, which is being organised by Haltemprice Lions Club, and to help maximise the amount raised for the charity.

David said: “We have supported a number of sporting dinners in recent years and as we approach Educare’s 20th anniversary in April we wanted to aim for the top. In cricketing and fund-raising terms it doesn’t get any bigger than Sir Ian Botham and we are delighted that he is able to help us.”

The dinner will take place at the Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel on Wednesday 11 April and will also feature Geoff Miller, another former England cricketer. Proceeds will go to the MS Society and to other local charities selected by Haltemprice Lions.

Sir Ian’s record-breaking cricket career included 102 Test matches spanning 16 seasons, 116 limited-overs internationals and more than 400 First Class appearances. He was the first player to achieve the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in Test cricket, and his talent as an all-rounder even extended to football – he played as a centre half for Scunthorpe United and was appointed as the club’s president in December 2017.

After retiring from cricket, Sir Ian became a respected analyst and commentator. He also devoted more time to the charity work which included fund-raising endurance walks from John O’Groats to Land’s End, across the Alps, through Sri Lanka and Australia, where he completed his final trek in December 2017.

David said: “We have been looking after children in the Beverley area for 20 years and we recognise the importance to children around the world of Sir Ian’s fund-raising achievements, which began more than 30 years ago.

“We are putting together some exclusive sponsorship packages for what is a rare opportunity to meet a truly iconic personality at an event which is suitable for all audiences. We hope businesses in the area will join us and Haltemprice Lions in raising as much money as possible for the MS Society and other local charities.”
